The current research profile of the Department of Microbiology includes:

- virulence and resistance of Helicobacter pylori', with particular emphasis on the phenomenon of biofilm formation and morphological variability

- modern methods for the inactivation and eradication of pathogenic bacteria and fungi (e.g. photodynamic inactivation, antimicrobial peptides, compounds of natural origin)

- methods of preventing adhesion and formation of biofilm by microorganisms

- epidemiology, prevention and control of infections

- studies on the biocompatibility of graphene doped biomaterials and functional coatings

- studies on the so-called "brain – gut axis" and "heart – gut axis", aiming to establish a link between the intestinal microflora and cardiovascular and neurodegenerative diseases

- studies on the influence of the intestinal microflora on the calming of inflammation under the influence of natural compounds

Scientific research is conducted using modern equipment, such as:

- integrated BioFlux 1000z system (Fluxion Biosciences) for biofilm growing and analysis (by introducing flow, it effectively imitates in vivo conditions; provides a platform for screening)

- CDC Biofilm Reactor (BioSurface Technologies Corporation) for biofilm growing (allows testing of biomaterials, assessment of biofilm sensitivity to antimicrobial agents)

In the Department of Microbiology, research projects are carried out in cooperation with academic and clinical partners, at national and international levels. We cooperate with, among others: Łukasiewicz Research Network – PORT Polish Center for Technology Development, University of Limerick, University of Wrocław, Wrocław University of Environmental and Life Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław. There is a microbiological laboratory at the Department (currently the Microbiology Laboratory of the Wroclaw Medical University Foundation) providing services for the diagnosis of infectious diseases.
