Medical activity profile of the unit:

Clinical Department of Internal and Occupational Diseases, Hypertension and Clinical Oncology is a department with a 24-hour emergency internal medicine service and a profile for the diagnosis and treatment of primary and secondary hypertension, assessment of organ complications and treatment of co-morbidities.

Based on the team's many years of experience and access to state-of-the-art testing methods, the Clinical Department offers diagnosis and treatment within the Clinical Department of Hypertension, in particular:

  • hypertension difficult to control
  • resistant hypertension
  • hypertension accompanied by sleep apnoea syndrome
  • hypertension with coexisting advanced atherosclerosis
  • hypertension of hormonal aetiology
  • patients with symptoms of kidney disease and hypertension
  • conservative treatment of ischaemic strokes, arrhythmias, pulmonary embolism and hypertensive crisis.
  • rare monogenic forms of hypertension.

The Clinic Department is one of the leading centres offering comprehensive diagnosis and care for patients with the above-mentioned forms of hypertension.

The profile of activities performed in the Clinical Department within the Clinical Department of Internal Medicine includes:

  • comprehensive diagnosis, optimisation of therapy and assessment of cardiovascular complications in the course of diabetes
  • comprehensive diagnosis, optimisation of therapy and assessment of cardiovascular complications in the course of chronic kidney disease,
  • diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular lesions in the course of systemic connective tissue diseases
  • changes in the cardiovascular system resulting from iatrogenic effects, especially oncological chemotherapeutic treatment,
  • comprehensive diagnostics and screening in haemato-oncology and clinical oncology
  • internal medicine and cardiology consultation prior to non-cardiac surgery
  • principles of control and treatment of patients in the postoperative period,
  • internist palliative care

The diagnostic and treatment facilities include:
a 55-bed department providing diagnosis and treatment of most internal diseases based on the diagnostic capabilities of the University Clinical Hospital (full-profile state-of-the-art laboratory and imaging diagnostics) and in-house laboratories operating in the Clinical Department within the Medical University:

  • Ultrasound Laboratory – performing examinations: echocardiography, Doppler ultrasound of the arterial and venous system (cephalic arteries, renal arteries, lower limbs), abdominal ultrasound, thyroid, soft tissue;
  • Exercise Testing Laboratory – non-invasive diagnosis of coronary artery disease;
  • Holter laboratory: resting ECG and Holter studies - diagnosis of rhythm and conduction disorders, APBM - 24-hour blood pressure measurement,
  • Cardiovascular Research Laboratory: testing the stiffness of vessels, full-profile testing of endothelial function, applanation tonometry (as part of the scientific activities of the Wroclaw Medical University),
  • Sleep laboratory with comprehensive polysomnographic diagnostics (within the scientific activities of the Wroclaw Medical University) – a leading centre in the region
  • Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Laboratory – comprehensive diagnosis of thyroid diseases,
  • Respiratory Function Testing Laboratory – possibility to perform spirometry, plethysmography and DLCO assessment,
  • Personalised Medicine Laboratory – possibility to perform extracorporeal photopheresis in autoimmune disorders
  • Monitored beds – with intensive cardiac monitoring capability – management of life-threatening patients. Non-invasive treatment of ischaemic stroke (telemetry, ventilatory support – CPAP/BIPAP).

Clinical Department of Internal and Occupational Diseases, Hypertension and Clinical Oncology is the region's leading centre for the training of doctors, paramedics and nurses, as well as specialists in various fields.
The Clinical Department has specialisation places (accreditation) in Internal Medicine and Hypertensiology.
