Main research areas:

The scientific interests of the Department's employees include many issues related to the pathophysiology, diagnosis and treatment of allergic diseases. In recent years, this has included an assessment of the factors responsible for the progressive and irreversible impairment of lung function observed in bronchial asthma and obstructive pulmonary disease. Subepithelial fibrosis progression and TGF-beta expression in the respiratory tract were studied in relation to asthma duration and treatment. Research was conducted on the regulation of histamine receptor expression on smooth muscle cells, the use of heparin in nebulisation as an agent that can counteract proliferative processes in the bronchi.

Due to the specific role of the eosinophil in the maintenance of the allergic inflammatory process, the anti-eosinophilic action of IL-12 has been undertaken, and other factors influencing eosinophil activity in hitherto poorly understood autoimmune urticaria and idiopathic cough are also currently being investigated.

Research activities also include the problems of regulation of the immune response, mechanisms of action of specific immunotherapy and the development of allergen tolerance. The place of state-of-the-art recombinant allergen-based vaccines in both the diagnosis and therapy of allergic diseases is being defined.
A highly significant ongoing issue is the monitoring and ways to evaluate the effectiveness of specific immunotherapy with stinging insect venom on the basis of modern laboratory methods.

Other extensive research concerns the in vivo and in vitro diagnosis of drug allergies, as well as the assessment of determining the sensitivity and specificity of these methods. The research is conducted in cooperation with foreign centres as part of the international projects of the European Network for Drug Allergy and the European BAT Core Group.

Obstructive pulmonary disease and its coexistence syndrome with bronchial asthma also remains of interest to researchers. An issue without many studies to date, but which is the subject of clinical research, is asthma in pregnant women, as well as asthma in old age.

Given the interdisciplinary nature of the problems faced by modern allergology, ongoing research into the issues of tolerability of cardioselective beta-adrenergic receptor blockers against beta2-adrenergic receptor polymorphisms is of particular interest.
