History of the clinical department:

The Wrocław Clinical Department was established in 1876 as a result of its separation from the surgical clinic of the University of Wrocław. Its founder was H. Köbner, PhD. Since 1882, the clinical department was headed by Albert Neisser, who by then had already discovered the bacteria that causes gonorrhoea. A. Neisser created his own school during his 34 years of management (1882-1916), and many of his students took up numerous departments in Europe and even Japan.

After the death of A. Neisser, the leadership of the Clinical Department was taken over by one of his most talented students, Josef Jadassohn, also a prominent figure in European and global dermatology.

Between 1890 and 1934, the Wrocław clinical department was at the forefront of European dermatology, becoming a widely recognised scientific centre. Young, prominent young dermatologists from Europe and the USA came here for training.

A team of prominent dermatologists, the vast majority of whom were of Jewish origin, had to emigrate in the 1930s to other European countries and to America. Among them were Rudolf Mayer, Wilhelm Siegmund Frei, Walter Freudenthal, Herman Pinkus, Stephen Epstein, Hans Biberstein and Max Jessner.

The almost completely deserted department was taken over by H. Gottron, who arrived from Berlin and headed the clinic from 1935 to 1945. He was associated with the Nazi regime. During the war he coordinated, with the rank of high officer, the defence of the city. However, as a scientist and high-calibre specialist, he is recognised as an authority in world dermatology.

After the war, the clinical department was taken over and run by Polish dermatologists from 1945. The first head was Prof. Jan Lenartowicz (1946-1948), a well-known and prominent dermatologist from the interwar period. He was followed by Prof. Henryk Mierzecki, who organised and formed the scientific team at the Wrocław clinical department for 13 years (1948-1961).

From 1961 to 1977, the clinical department was headed by Prof. Józef Kubicz, and from 1977 to 2001 by Prof. Feliks Wąsik.

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, based on global scientific trends at the time, a multi-year scientific programme was developed. It was created while organising the clinical immunology and medical mycology laboratories at the same time.

Individual departments were dealt with in different teams. The number of scientific publications increased from a few per year in the 1950s to a dozen in the 1960s and dozens in the 1980s and 1990s.

From 2001 to 2012, the clinical department was headed by Prof. Eugeniusz Baran.

In total, in the years 2001-2005, the staff of the Clinical Department published 313 scientific papers in print, a large part of them in foreign journals, 42 chapters in textbooks, 4 textbooks were published ("Leczenie chorób skóry i przenoszonych drogą płciową" ed. by J. Szepietowski, "Grzybice skóry i paznokci" by J. Szepietowski, "Grzybice superficial - atlas" by M. Lange and J. Szepietowski and "Podstawowy kurs chirurgii skóry" by A. Bieniek and W. Baran). In the last academic year of the period in question, the scientific activities of the Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology received the highest ranking of all units of the Wroclaw Medical Academy.

There was significant staff participation in 65 national and international scientific conventions, conferences and symposia, at which 271 papers and poster reports were presented. The Department was the organiser of a national congress - the XXVII Congress of the Polish Society of Dermatology, Wrocław, June 2001 - and two international congresses: 10th Congres of the European Confederation of Medical Mycology. Wrocław June 2004, and The 150th Anniversary of Albert Neisser Birth. Wrocław May 2005.

In 2002, following the death of Prof. Feliks Wąsik, in order to commemorate his achievements in the field of dermatological oncology, the Prof. Feliks Wąsik Prize was established, which has been awarded annually since 2003 for the best paper in dermatological oncology published by a Polish researcher. The winner presents the award-winning paper at a meeting of the Lower Silesian Department of the Polish Dermatological Society.

In 2005, the so-called Albert Neisser Annual Lecture was launched. The first lecture was given by Prof. Gerd Plewig, honoris causa of our university, followed in 2006 by Prof. Wiesław Gliński, president of the Polish Dermatological Society.

The Clinical Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology conducts international scientific cooperation resulting in joint projects and research work with Clinical Departments of Dermatology in New Jersey, Edinburgh, Nagoya, Munich, Dresden and Cardiff, as well as the Clinical Department of Psychiatry in New York, the Department of Psychology in Nijmegen, and the Centre for Palliative Medicine in Oxford. It continues its long-standing cooperation with the Clinical Department of Haematology, Blood Neoplasms and Bone Marrow Transplantation; Nephrology and Transplantation Medicine; Psychiatry; Endocrinology, Diabetes and Isotope Therapy; Paediatric Endocrinology; Vascular, General and Transplantation Surgery; Department of Family Medicine in Wrocław and the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wrocław, Clinics of Dermatology in Warsaw, Poznań, Łódź, Katowice and Białystok. Cooperation with Polish industrial plants such as KGHM Polska Miedź SA has continued for years. Dr A. Bieniek completed foreign internships at the Clinic of Dermatology in Munich (2002) and at the Alameda Dermatology Centre in Lisbon (2004).

Between 2001 and 2005, the Department's equipment was expanded to include a thermal imaging camera, an ozone therapy apparatus, a mesotherapy set, a video track for the analysis of histopathological preparations with camera and microscope, an argon laser, lamps for therapeutic irradiation (Cosmedico GH-8 ST for TL 01 irradiation, Cosmedico GP-42 for PUVA and TL 01 irradiation, Selwas 3000 UVA, Walkman UV 801 BL), UV/PDT meter and skin sensitivity tester (Varicontrol), skin ultrasound machine and 2 digital cameras for documenting clinical images.

Since 1 October 2012, the clinical department has been headed by Prof. Jacek Szepietowski.

In the same year, our Clinical Department won in the Medical Tribune's "Ideal Clinic 2012 – Dermatology" ranking. Out of 198 randomly selected dermatologists from all over Poland, 18.18 per cent indicated the Clinical Department of the Wroclaw Medical University as their dream workplace (with the proviso that one cannot indicate their own workplace).
