Clinical Department of Geriatrics – science

Scientific research at the Clinical Department of Geriatrics focuses on physiological and pathological phenomena of the ageing process and major geriatric problems, including dementia (e.g. Alzheimer's disease), delirium and depression, as well as various aspects of the "frailty syndrome", diabetes, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease, as well as polyphagia, leading to iatrogenic geriatric syndrome.

Currently, a statutory project is being implemented – SIMPLE number: SUBZ.A310.24.024 , entitled:
Effect of of physical and mental status of older people on their sexual activity. ("Wpływ stanu fizycznego i psychicznego osób starszych na ich aktywność seksualną.")

Science

The clinical geriatric ward is a centre of the highest reference providing medical services to patients of geriatric age (≥ 65 years old and ≥ 60 years old with multimorbidity) in the mode of scheduled admissions from the Lower Silesia region. During hospitalisation, patients undergo extensive diagnostics, including multidisciplinary medical consultations and a panel of tests, including imaging. In addition, a multi-stage Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment (CGA) procedure is performed, including tests and questionnaires providing screening data on the patient's functional capacity, cognitive disorders (various forms of dementia), depression and delirium and the risk of malnutrition and falls, as well as the detection of sarcopenia and frailty syndrome and osteoporosis.

      Patients' socioeconomic status is also assessed and, in justified cases, transfer to long-term care facilities is organised, the drugs and supplements they take are verified in terms of polypharmacy (unjustified treatment with multiple drugs or harmful combinations of preparations).

      According to data from a recent audit by the Supreme Audit Office (NIK), extending holistic geriatric care to patients in their senior years optimises the health problems of older people, making it possible for them to live more comfortably and independently for a longer period of time by: reducing the risk of death (by 22% one year after hospital intervention); reducing the risk of re-hospitalisation (by 12%); increasing the likelihood of continuing to live in one's own home (by 47%) and increasing the chance of improving the way of functioning (by 72%).
