Proposed development programme for the Clinical Department of Ophthalmology at Wroclaw Medical University

In the development plan of the Clinical Department for the upcoming years, several research areas of particular importance can be distinguished, such as: retinal diseases, cornea and glaucoma.

1. Retina-related research

  • Research on excessive cell proliferation and possibilities of limiting it. The main objective is to continue research on the mechanisms of excessive proliferation in the course of proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) and the possibilities of limiting that process. As part of the research conducted in that area, the Clinical Department of Ophthalmology has established cooperation with academic centres in Bremen and Tübingen. In the future, we would like to broaden the scope of that collaboration and jointly apply for international research funding.
  • Work on a new vitreous body substitute. In the surgical treatment of retinal and vitreous disorders, intraocular tamponade plays an important role as a substitute for the vitreous body removed during the surgery.
  • Diabetic retinopathy. Research on the role of pro-inflammatory cytokines and growth factors in the development of proliferative retinopathy and the possibilities of using antibodies against vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in the treatment of this disease

2. Research related to corneal diseases.

  • Introduction of new methods of treating corneal diseases, such as cross-linking and layer transplantation. We are planning to introduce anterior corneal layer transplantation in cases of keratoconus and corneal opacities due to herpes virus infection. We are going to assess the effectiveness of selected immunosuppressive drugs (mycophenolate mofetil).

3. Glaucoma-related research.

  • Studies on the sensitivity and specificity of new testing techniques in the diagnosis of glaucomatous optic nerve neuropathy. Based on the previous research experience of our Clinical Department, we want to continue assessing the possibility of using new research methods in screening tests. At a later stage, we intend to propose a pilot programme of such research on the Wrocław population.
  • The impact of vascular disorders on the development of glaucomatous neuropathy and the correlation of functional and anatomical changes in the optic nerve. In this respect, the Clinical Department will continue cooperation with centres located in the USA: Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia and the university centre in Indianapolis.

4. Other research directions.

  • Interclinical research on cerebral lupus conducted jointly with the Clinical Department of Rheumatology, Radiology and Neurology. In the ophthalmological aspect, the condition of the optic nerve and the correlation between the involvement of the central nervous system and eye diseases will be assessed.
  • Uveitis. Studies on the immunological pathomechanisms of non-infectious inflammatory diseases of the uvea, especially the indirect part, including assessment of the activity and proliferative capacity of lymphocytes.

Didactic and organisational development plans

  • The Clinical Department will continue to conduct training courses for doctors:
  • Glaucoma
  • Uveitis.
  • Continuation of the organisation of the international conference series: "Ophthalmology-Controversies". /previous editions attracted 1,500 participants each/.
  • Organisation of cyclical monthly scientific and training meetings for ophthalmologists from the Lower Silesia region
  • Organisation of the "Young Talents" Conference
