In 1974, the Laboratory of Clinical Laboratory Diagnostics was established at the Biological and Pharmaceutical Institute of the Faculty of Pharmacy, which enabled fourth and fifth-year pharmacy students to specialise in clinical analytics. At that time, the head of the unit was Michał Masiak, PhD. The laboratory was located at 38 Szewska Street and the classes were conducted in the laboratories of university hospitals and in the room of the Division of Biochemistry of the Faculty of Pharmacy. In 1978, the Division of Medical Laboratory Diagnostics was created as part of the Institute of Bioanalysis and Environmental Research. Following the liquidation of the Institute in the academic year 1981/1982, the Department and Division of Medical Laboratory Diagnostics was created and the head was Prof. Michał Masiak, PhD. After the professor's death in 1993, the head was Stanisława Skowron-Szlósarczyk, PhD, and Prof. Mieczysław Woźniak, PhD, became the head of the Department and Division in 1995. In 2011, the Department of Medical Laboratory Diagnostics was created under the supervision of Prof. M. Woźniak, PhD. There were two divisions within the Department: the Division of Clinical Chemistry, headed by Iwona Bil-Lula, PhD, and the Division of Laboratory Haematology, the first head of which was Jadwiga Nowicka, PhD, and the duties were taken over by Iwona Urbanowicz, PhD, later on. In October 2019, two divisions were merged into one - Division of Clinical Chemistry and Laboratory Haematology and the head was Iwona Bil-Lula, PhD.
There are 17 employees in the Department: Iwona Bil-Lula, PhD, university professor, Grzegorz Sawicki, PHD, university professor, Assistant Professors: Mariola Śliwińska-Mossoń, PhD, Iwona Urbanowicz, PhD, Anna Krzywonos-Zawadzka, PhD, Wiesława Nahaczewska, PhD, Agnieszka Sapa-Wojciechowska, PhD, assistants: Agnieszka Olejnik, PhD, Jakub Szyller, PhD, Alina Rak-Pasikowska, MA, Marta Banaszkiewicz, MA, Aleksandra Franczak, MA, Katarzyna Wadowska, MA, engineering and technical employees: technicians: Renata Kozłowska, Agnieszka Bondyra, MA, and Magdalena Gil-Woźniak, MA - office assistant. It is worth mentioning that Henryk Owczarek, PhD, one of the main authors of the Laboratory Diagnostics Act and the first President of the National Chamber of Laboratory Diagnosticians in the period from 2002 to 2010, began his career in the Department.
The main areas of research of the Department are: the metabolism of cardiac tissue damaged by hypoxia and oxygen shock, the role of extracellular matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the development of cardiovascular diseases, monitoring of the course of adenovirus infection in patients after haematopoietic cell transplantation and in obese patients, the role of the USP nuclear receptor in the regulation of gene expression, the factors influencing platelet ageing, the differences in the structure, reactivity and activity of platelet subpopulations, the influence of MMPs on thrombocyte function and the polymorphism of CDK inhibitor protein genes in CLL. As part of its scientific activity, the Department has also started international cooperation with many units, e.g.: Department of Pharmacology, University of Saskatchewan in Canada; School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, University of Dublin, Ireland, and Center de Recherche en Cancérologie, Lyon, France.
As part of its didactic activity, the Department conducts classes for students in the Medical Analytics major for all years of study in the twelve core professional subjects. There are also scientific associations in the Department. The employees of the Department prepare textbooks for students and diagnosticians and translate foreign textbooks. The Department conducts specialisation courses for laboratory diagnosticians, e.g. in the fields of laboratory medical diagnostics and laboratory medical transfusiology, as well as development courses for diagnosticians and physicians. The practical part of the State Specialisation Examination for Laboratory Diagnosticians in laboratory medical diagnostics is organised in the Department.
