BUMWRO 2023 is behind us

Although it promised to be the first ever rainy University of Wroclaw Run, the weather was fine, as were the good spirits. Several hundred people took part in BUMWRO 2023, which this year took place on a new route, and among them were up-and-comers and small BUMKIDS athletes. The rector of our university, Professor Piotr Ponikowski, who is in the process of winning the crown of marathons, also took part in the competition.

The new, traditionally certified 10 km route led along the Old Oder River through the areas of the Morskie Oko Swimming Pool, the Olympic Stadium complex, the Champs de Mars, Szczytnicki Park and the Pergola by the Centennial Hall. In turn, the start, finish line and running town were located on the campus of the UMW Faculty of Health Sciences at 5 Bartla Street.

- We heard a lot of kind words from the runners at the finish line about the new route, which makes us very happy," says Tomasz Zatonski, PhD, UMW professor, the university's vice-rector for building relations and cooperation with the community and director of BUMWRO. - They praised the varied terrain, which is of considerable importance to runners, as well as the attractive views and lots of greenery.

Almost half a thousand people took part in the general run. In the open category, not for the first time, Arkadiusz Gardzielewski won with a time of 30 minutes and 17 seconds. Among women, in turn, the fastest was Magdalena Patas, who covered the distance in 36 min. 19 sec.

Industry competitions were held on the same stretch. UMW employees checked in at the finish line in the following order: Piotr Lepka from the Department of Gynecologic Oncology, Andrzej Konieczny from the Department of Nephrology and Transplant Medicine, and Luis Romero from the Department of Hematology, Blood Cancer and Bone Marrow Transplantation. In the women's classification, the fastest was Anna Kolcz, dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, Luba Slósarz of the Department of Humanistic Health Sciences, and Magdalena Saciuk.

Among UMW students, the first three places on the podium were taken by Kinga Pietras (38 min. 03 sec.) Gabriel Lowicki (39 min. 40 sec.) and Karolina Stwawarz (39 min. 56 sec.). The doctors' competition was won by Mateusz Glod, followed by Jan Piotrowski and Pavel Studnicki, and during the police championship the fastest were Tomasz Parysek, Piotr Fielek and Szymon Fiedorow.

For the past few years, the University of Wroclaw Medical University's Run has also included runners, i.e. duos: children with disabilities in jogging strollers and their caregivers. This year there were 31 such crews. There was no shortage of emotions when the youngest, whose health condition allowed them to do so, covered the last meters of the route on their own, supported by their "pushers - runners."

The youngest, or BUMKIDS participants, also registered at the start line. More than 70 children competed at distances prepared for three age groups: 400 meters for children aged 6-7; 800 meters for children aged 8-9; 1200 meters for children aged 10-12.

- The route of our run has changed, but the goal remains the same: to have fun, promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. We didn't lack that today, and we thank all those who were with us and invite you next year," adds Tomasz Zatonski, PhD, UMW professor.

Special thanks are due to our volunteers: students from the patron classes (the 8th and 14th High Schools in Wroclaw and the 1st High School from Olesnica), the Center for Vocational and Continuing Education in Ludow Polski and students of the University of the Third Age at UMW.
