We remember the outstanding

He is the patron of a UMW medal and a street in Wroclaw, and now has his own plaque. Prof. Boguslaw Bobrański, an outstanding chemist and creator of the first original drug in postwar Poland, was associated with Wroclaw for many years, laying the foundations of the current UMW Pharmaceutical Faculty. It was here that a plaque was unveiled on November 6 this year, commemorating this meritorious for science and extraordinary figure.

The ceremony, organized by the UMW Department of Pharmacy, the Lower Silesia Pharmacy Foundation and the Wroclaw branch of the Polish Pharmaceutical Society, brought together many people who personally knew the professor, who died in 1991. Also present were his daughter Alicja Bobrańska-Kuś and his grandchildren.

Professor Boguslaw Bobrański's greatest achievement was the synthesis of proxybarbal, marketed as a psychotropic drug. It was also the first original drug developed in post-war Poland. However, the professor was the creator of many other successes, just to mention 150 experimental papers and dozens of patents. Prof. Bobronski had merits not only in the field of science, but also in the field of didactics and organization. Various aspects of the scientist's work were presented by the chairman of the Polish Pharmacy Foundation, Prof. Janusz Pluta, the dean of the UMW Pharmaceutical Faculty, Dr. Marcin Mączyński, Prof. UMW, and Dr. Piotr Świątek, Prof. UMW (Department of Drug Chemistry). Special guest Prof. Roman Lesyk of Lviv National University recalled the scientist's Lviv period, presenting previously unknown archives, such as his employment contract at Jan Kazimierz University and handwritten notes, written in Ukrainian.

Dr. Piotr Kuś of the UMW Department of Pharmacognosy and Plant Medicine talked about his famous grandfather, in whose memories he remained a man who was comprehensively talented, interested in many fields and, above all, hardworking to the end of his life.

- I know that my grandfather was considered strict," said the grandson. - I've seen caricatures of him carved on windows in Tamka Street, signed "Bober," testifying to the kind of reputation he had among students. Few people know his other face. Grandfather was a polyglot, a fan of travel, a lover of photography and a talented musician. He played many instruments and whistled opera arias. He was also a social soul and a lover of plants - he grew a date palm from a seed and a banana tree that bore fruit, for example. I also remember how hardworking he was: he was constantly fixing something, checking things, he was everywhere. Unfortunately, I didn't have the opportunity to discuss serious topics with my grandfather, because he died when I was 6 years old.

The plaque unveiled on November 6 this year at the Faculty of Pharmacy is not the only sign of remembrance associated with Prof. Bobrański. A medal named after him is awarded to outstanding graduates of the department. For several years - at the request of the faculty's authorities - Prof. Bobrański has been the patron of the street running in its vicinity (a side street of Borowska Street).
