 – surgical treatment of facial bone fractures using modern osteosynthesis systems according to AO/AOCMF protocols
 – treatment of ocular injuries, post-traumatic double vision
 – surgical treatment of temporomandibular joint injuries using prostheses

Developmental defects in the craniofacial skeleton:

– multispecialised treatment of congenital and acquired disorders of the craniofacial skeleton
 – orthognathic surgery
 – surgical support for orthodontic treatment
 – distraction of the craniofacial skeleton, including transorbital distraction
 – surgical treatment of craniofacial bone abnormalities

Pre-prosthetic surgery:

– reconstruction of the bone before implantological and implantoprosthetic treatment
 – bone grafts for the reconstruction of the alveolar process
 – maxillary reconstruction using bone grafts from the cranial vault

Maxillofacial oncology:

– diagnostics (CT, MRI, PET) of oral and facial tumours
 – surgical treatment of benign and malignant tumours and non-malignant tumours (bone dysplasias, pseudotumours)
 – reconstructive surgery after removal of malignant tumours
 – surgical treatment of orbital tumours
 – orbital decompression in Graves-Basedow disease

Inflammations:

– diagnosis of specific and non-specific inflammations

History of the Clinical Department

The teaching of dentistry in liberated Wrocław began in 1945 thanks to a group of enthusiastic pioneers, disciples of the Father of Polish Dentistry, Professor Antoni Cieszyński from Lviv. The Department and Clinical Department of Dental and Maxillofacial Surgery was created from scratch by Prof. Tadeusz Owiński, PhD, In the years 1947-1948 and was its head until 1970. After him, the institution was headed by: Prof. Tadeusz Pawela , PhD, and Prof. Feliks Ćwioro, PhD, until 1997. Then, in the years 1997-2011, Prof. Jan Wnukiewicz headed the Clinical Department of Maxillofacial Surgery. Since 2011, Prof. Hanna Gerber, MD, PhD is the head of the Clinical Department of Maxillofacial Surgery.

The Clinical Department offers classes for 4th and 5th year students of the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry in maxillofacial surgery (also part of the English Division training) and in propaedeutics of dentistry for 3rd year students of the Faculty of Medicine (also in English).

Main research areas:

- The use of 3D digital technology in the diagnosis and planning of surgical procedures.
- Possibilities of using bone anchorage in corrective procedures within the craniofacial skeleton.
- Photodynamic therapy in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the mucous membranes.
- The use of stable and functional osteosynthesis in the treatment of craniofacial injuries.

The Clinical Department's didactic activities include, for the Faculty of Dentistry, classes in maxillofacial surgery (for 4th and 5th year students) ending with an exam (in the 5th year of study), and for the Faculty of Medicine we conduct classes in the propaedeutics of dentistry (for 3rd year students). The same subjects and number of hours cover classes for English Division (ED) students.

During classes, students are introduced to analogue and digital radiology, modern spiral and cone CT, MRI, PET, scintigraphy, ultrasound in head and neck disorders. They learn about clinical indications for radiological diagnosis with radiological image evaluation. They learn the basics of the description of pantomographic X-rays in various disease states, taking into account artifacts and exposure errors.

During maxillofacial surgery classes, students learn about the differential diagnosis of diseases of the craniofacial diseases, determination of tactics and postoperative care of the patient, in order to learn about the ways and possibilities of outpatient care that patients will later require in dental outpatient clinics. The students of the Faculty of Medicine learn the principles of cooperation between doctors of various specialisations with a dentist and a maxillofacial surgeon as part of classes on the propaedeutics of dentistry, including such issues as prevention of oral cavity diseases (caries and periodontium, oncological prophylaxis), first aid in craniofacial injuries, dental inflammation, craniofacial pain, treatment options for gnatic defects, focal disorders requiring cooperation with the dentist and emergencies in maxillofacial surgery. These activities are extended to include specialisation courses for doctors, conducting part-time internships for specialisation in various fields of medicine and dentistry, and, for interested students, there is an opportunity to work in the Student Scientific Club.
