SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH
The scientific research carried out in recent years in the Department of Medical Biology and Parasitology covers two main thematic groups.
-
Microbiological research
– use of plant-based preparations containing anthocyanins and other heterocyclic compounds against uropathogenic Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Enterobacter cloacae. The aim of the research is to look for agents that can reduce the possibility of urinary tract infections by bacteria. Research on the effect (or biological activity) of these preparations on the virulence characteristics and biofilm-forming ability of E. coli strains is being conducted at both phenotypic and genotypic levels using molecular biology methods.
– use of photodynamic therapy to inactivate pathogenic bacteria for humans. -
Parasitological research
– occurrence of opportunistic parasites and immunological analysis in immunosuppressed patients. The research focuses on people living with HIV, patients with pharmacologically induced immunosuppression (organ recipients, children with cancer), as well as pregnant women and premature infants in the Lower Silesian population. Our research mainly focuses on the prevalence and molecular characteristics of microsporidia, Cryptosporidium spp. and Pneumocystis jirovecii. There is also research on the prevalence of free-living free-living amoebas, including those of the genus Acanthamoeba, in humans.
– a separate group consists of research on the search for natural reservoirs of opportunistic parasites for humans in the zoonotic environment. The research is conducted using classical diagnostic techniques and molecular biology techniques.
LABORATORIES:
Parasitology Laboratory – head: Maria Wesołowska, PhD
The Laboratory performs research to confirm or exclude the presence of parasites (with particular emphasis on opportunistic ones) in patients with immunosuppression. For this purpose, standard and novel methods of immunoenzymatic and molecular diagnostics are applied. In addition, research is being conducted on tropical parasites, e.g. of the genus Plasmodium, which causes malaria, microfilariasis and leishmaniasis.
Molecular Biology Laboratory – head: Marta Kicia, PhD, Prof. of the Wroclaw Medical University
The Laboratory conducts molecular research in two thematic areas. On the one hand, the subject of research includes the identification and molecular characterization of parasites in immunocompetent and immunosuppressed patients. Our interests include both opportunistic and tropical parasites. In addition, the Laboratory conducts research on the molecular characteristics of Escherichia coli strains isolated from the urine of patients diagnosed with various clinical forms of urinary tract infections. In the implementation of research, we use methods based on both classical PCR and real-time quantitative PCR (qRT-PCR).
