The Clinical Department of Orthopedics, Traumatology and Hand Surgery at the University Clinical Hospital in Wrocław provides a full range of orthopedic procedures, both for emergency trauma patients and planned surgeries. As part of the Trauma Center, it offers comprehensive care for patients with multiple injuries. The department treats complex limb injuries, including crush injuries and soft tissue defects, with multi-stage surgical (reconstructive) treatment carried out in collaboration with specialists from other surgical fields. The clinic also manages cases of complicated wound healing, soft tissue defects, bone healing disorders, and performs joint replacements, including hip joint replacements using minimally invasive surgical access and knee joint replacements. The center specializes in upper limb joint replacements, including shoulder, elbow, CMC I, and interphalangeal joint replacements. Among the arthroscopic procedures routinely performed at the clinic are knee, shoulder, ankle, elbow, and wrist arthroscopies, with a special focus on reconstructive procedures (e.g., anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction, shoulder joint instability surgeries, and triangular cartilage injuries).

A key component of the clinic’s activities is hand surgery, including decompression surgeries for nerve compression syndromes in the upper and lower limbs, functional reconstruction of the upper limb, and correction of acquired and congenital deformities using the Ilizarov method. The department also performs corrective and reconstructive surgeries for foot deformities and degenerative diseases. It is important to note that the clinic has extensive experience, unique in the country, in treating patients with brachial plexus injuries, peripheral nerve reconstructive surgeries, and reconstructive procedures using the Ilizarov method. The center has experience in treating traumatic peripheral nerve injuries and nerve compression syndromes (idiopathic, post-traumatic, post-radiation).

The clinic also treats patients with musculoskeletal tumors, both secondary (metastatic) and primary. In addition to traditional surgical treatment, some of these patients receive comprehensive treatment, including interventional radiology procedures such as chemoembolization of lesions and thermoablation procedures.

As part of its medical activities, the clinic performs unique medical procedures in the following areas:

  • Treatment of traumatic injuries of the peripheral nervous system, particularly brachial plexus injuries
  • Removal of peripheral nerve tumors using microsurgical techniques
  • Arthroscopy of the knee, shoulder, and radiocarpal joints
  • Surgical treatment of primary and metastatic tumors in the musculoskeletal system using custom and segmental endoprostheses
  • Cartilage transplants
  • Use of the Ilizarov distraction osteogenesis method in the treatment of congenital and acquired limb length discrepancies and deformities
  • Surgical treatment of complex, multi-site pelvic fractures using internal and external osteosynthesis techniques.
