New Publication: Enhancing Research Methods in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Rehabilitation

We are pleased to announce the publication of a new editorial titled Enhancing Research Methods: The Role of Systematic and Scoping Reviews in Orthopaedics, Sports Medicine, and Rehabilitation in the Journal of Experimental Orthopaedics, the official journal of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy (ESSKA).

Authored by leading experts in the field—Robert Prill, Enes Kayaalp, Nikolai Ramadanov, Jon Karlsson, and Michael T. Hirschmann—along with Aleksandra Królikowska, convenor of our Evidence-Based Healthcare in Wroclaw: A JBI Affiliated Group, this editorial underscores the essential role of varied review methodologies in enhancing research standards. While randomized controlled trials remain the gold standard for primary data collection, the authors emphasize systematic reviews as the benchmark for evidence synthesis in medicine.

The editorial also discusses the limitations of narrative and systematic reviews in addressing specific research questions, advocating for scoping reviews as a method to tackle broader, evolving questions, especially within orthopaedics and rehabilitation. The authors highlight the need for rigorous standards in scoping review methodologies to support evidence-based practices across medical fields.

This publication showcases the active contributions of our Wroclaw group to this important research area. We encourage all orthopaedics, sports medicine, and rehabilitation professionals to read the full editorial to gain insights into the evolving role of systematic and scoping reviews.
