Standing in solidarity with our student

Kareem has been released and is on his way home. We have received confirmation of his release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland. We are keeping our fingers crossed for his safe return home.

As the academic community of Wroclaw Medical University, we are deeply moved and concerned by the information we have received regarding Kareem, a sixth-year medical student in the English Division. According to reports available to us, he was detained in international waters while taking part in a civilian humanitarian mission aboard the “Global Sumud” flotilla, which was heading towards the Gaza Strip to deliver medical and logistical aid.

At this difficult time, we stand with his closest family, loved ones, and fellow students in our deep concern for his safety. We sincerely hope that the situation will be resolved swiftly and safely.

At the same time, we must make it clear that this matter concerns an international legal incident that occurred outside Poland. The University does not have diplomatic tools or operational powers to take action in matters of this nature; such responsibilities rest solely with the relevant state authorities and consular services.

Wroclaw Medical University remains, of course, fully ready to cooperate with the appropriate institutions and diplomatic authorities should our support or any information we hold prove helpful to their efforts.
