Supporting Young Mothers During the Postpartum Period
A team of researchers from the Faculty of Nursing and Midwifery at Wroclaw Medical University has published the results of their research on newborn care in the first days following childbirth in the prestigious Journal of Clinical Medicine. The article, titled "Maternal Readiness for Newborn Self-Care in the Early Postpartum Period: Associations with Maternal Psychophysical State and Declared Breastfeeding Readiness", sheds new light on the factors determining women's perceived readiness to provide independent care for their infants.
The research team included Anna Prokopowicz, Kinga Tułacz, Kamila Drobina, Łukasz Lewandowski and Izabella Uchmanowicz, RN, PhD, MBA, FESC, FHFA. The authors analyzed the relationship between maternal readiness for newborn care, the mother's psychophysical state, and her declared readiness to breastfeed.
The results indicate that a young mother’s readiness to take on the challenges of newborn care is strongly correlated with her emotional well-being and physical condition. The authors emphasize that breastfeeding itself is a significant factor in building this readiness. The findings suggest the need for routine assessment of women's condition during the postpartum period and the implementation of systemic solutions that provide support to young mothers from the very first moments after birth.
The project was made possible thanks to the support of several institutions and the dedication of the participants. The authors extend their gratitude to:
- Wroclaw Medical University – for funding the publication and creating an environment conducive to scientific research.
- University Clinical Hospital in Wroclaw – for facilitating the research and providing organizational support.
- Study Participants – all the women who shared their experiences; their openness was crucial to the success of this project.
