About the Laboratory

On 1 March 2015, at the request of the Council of the Faculty of Pharmacy with the Division of Medical Analytics at Wroclaw Medical University, an independent unit was established: Screening Biological Activity Assays and Collection of Biological Material Laboratory (Based on the Order of the Rector of Wroclaw Medical University No. 17/XV R/2015 of 27 February 2015).

As part of the project: "Construction and Equipment of the Integrated Education and Innovation Centre of the Faculty of Pharmacy at Wroclaw Medical University" the laboratory was equipped with modern scientific and research apparatus. The available equipment is presented under the APPARATUS tab.

Purpose and scope of the activity of the Laboratory in accordance with Order 17/XV R/2015 of 27 February 2015:

  1. Supporting the education of students in the Pharmacy and Medical Analytics majors in the field of performing analyses of biological properties using technologically advanced analytical equipment,

  2. Conducting elective courses for students at the Faculty,

  3. Supervision of MA theses,

  4. Supporting research conducted by PhD students and employees at the Faculty,

All Departments and Divisions of Wroclaw Medical University and other scientific and research units interested in cooperation with our Laboratory are encouraged to use the equipment and cooperate with us.

Qsep 100 Bioptic capillary electrophoresis apparatus for DNA and RNA

  • DNA separation range 20-15000bp

Aspirator bottle FTA-2i

  • for extracting alcohol or buffers remaining in tubes during DNA/RNA purification and other microparticle reprecipitation techniques

  • it can also be used for washing cell cultures

  • the bottle for the fluids to be suctioned is connected to the end part of the suction unit by a polyethylene tube. The fluid is removed when the suction tip comes into contact with the surface of the fluid

The Emmi 20HC two-litre all-purpose cleaner with adjustable ultrasonic power, temperature and a wide range of timers with an additional option for continuous operation.
The cleaner has a steel lid and a basket with handles, which makes it possible to place it in and remove it conveniently.
The ultrasonic power regulator enables achieving optimal efficiency for different types of contamination.

Smartcheck pipette verification device with PipetteX software

  • the SmartCheck weighs the supplied volumetric samples using the gravimetric method, then calculates random and systematic error based on four readings. This makes it possible to obtain a quick positive/negative result for the device and the user, indicated by a green or red light.

  • PipetteX is pipette management software. PipetteX software automatically stores pipette manufacturer information, notifies users when pipettes are due to be calibrated, and saves service data. This includes calibration reports, scheduled routine test periods and all routine check data for the SmartCheck or scales.

The Screening Biological Activity Assays and Collection of Biological Material Laboratory has an extensive library of analyses, from popular to highly specific t-tests, one-, two- and three-way ANOVA, linear and non-linear regression, dose-response curves, binary logistic regression, survival analysis, principal component analysis and many more. Each analysis comes with a checklist to help the user understand the required statistical assumptions and confirm the appropriate test selection.
