Dr Irena Duś-Ilnicka is a post-doctoral research assistant from the field of oral potentially malignant disorders, with a special interest in diagnostics and risk factors for carcinogenesis in relation to HPV and other cancer-related viruses. Laboratory diagnostician, PhD in the field of molecular biology, with diverse experience in innovative molecular biology methods used in medical diagnostics and therapy, for example:

  • embryology (including gamete and embryo biobanking, ICSI, pickup, freezing, and patient consulting),
  • biobanking as a general manager of the National Biobanking Node,
  • genetics diagnostics, and the creation of novel POCT techniques in the startup creating SARS CoV-2 diagnostics.

Irena has gained her scientific experience in European research laboratories and conducts international research projects with 1) IARC, WHO, Lyon, France; 2) Sapienza University of Rome; 3) the University of Campinas and Fiocruz Foundation in Brazil, among others. Her most important achievements in her professional career are described below.

  • March 2024: Completion of the application for a research and teaching grant in the field of simulation techniques in medical education co-created within the framework of the "Medical Universities Associated with the EUGLOH Network as the Coordinator on behalf of the Vice-Rector for University Development Strategy.

Her epidemiological research is based on the international collaboration:

  • May-June 2023: Five-week research, participation in plenary meetings of the expert group, and scientific contribution to the International Agency for Research on Cancer Handbooks of Cancer Prevention Volume 20A: Reduction or Cessation of Alcohol Consumption. She was granted the status of Early Stage Visiting Scientist.

Irena continues her research on the diagnosis of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the saliva of patients with oral lichen planus and other oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs):

  • May 2022: Weekly training and analysis of saliva and blood samples from patients with oral lichen planus in the Epigenomics and Mechanisms Division, International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), World Health Organization, Epigenomics and Mechanisms Division, Lyon, French International Agency for Research on Cancer, IARC). She obtained the status of an Early Career Visiting Scientist. She has initiated her research grant for analysis of HPV in the oral cavity with the five-week exchange from November to December 2021 in the same laboratory, receiving the status of Early Career Visiting Scientist.

Irena’s first publication in the field of OPMDs and HPV was published with renowned pathologists from the University of Cagliari in Italy and Wroclaw Medical University. It has shown how the standard immunohistochemical methods can contribute to the field of fastening the diagnosis of patients.

  • September 2022: Weekly teaching and research exchange at the Università degli Studi di Cagliari, Italy, resulting in a scientific publication: Duś-Ilnicka, I., Hałoń, A., Perra, A., et al. P16INK4A and HSV associated with HPV in benign and potentially malignant pathologies of the oral mucosa. BMC Oral Health 24, 347 (2024).

Confirming her research interest in the OPMD, she has recently been included in the COST action for the grant INTERCEPTOR (CA21140), Interception of oral cancer development (INTERCEPTOR), where she recently provided and invited a speech during the OPMDay congress in Porto.

Irena’s contribution to the field of diagnostics of other viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2, has been presented in two articles published in BMC Infectious Diseases and International Dental Journal, with the intention of representing the importance of the first-line workers’ support in the crisis of pandemic.

She has actively collaborated with the researchers with the use of transnational funds of EU collaborations of the KA171+ program:

  • July 2022: One-week teaching and research exchange at the Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Campinas, Brazil, resulted in a positive acceptance of the application to the European Commission KA171+ Activities and visits of Brazilian professors at the Wroclaw Medical University.

Irena has parallelly dived into the medical learning and teaching methods implementation by expressing my work in the field of the technique called Scholarship for Teaching and Learning:

  • June 2023: Organization of the first "Blended Intensive Program" at the Wroclaw Medical University, under the name "DentalOmics,” during which, in addition to the involvement of partners from the European Union, partners from the KA171 + group joined the program run by two institutions in Brazil, one of which is the Fiocruz Foundation. Completed with the publication Duś-Ilnicka, I., Paradowska-Stolarz, A., Mazur, M., et al. Implementation of a Blended Intensive Program in Dental Education: The Post-Pandemic Evolution of Learning. BMC Med Educ 24, 352 (2024).
