SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY

A. Main research directions:
- pathomechanisms of chronic kidney disease (CKD) in children undergoing conservative and renal replacement therapy,
- impact of genetic polymorphisms on the development and course of CKD, atherosclerosis risk factors and cardiovascular disorders in children with CKD,
- psychosocial aspects of CKD,
- obesity as a risk factor for kidney damage and the development of premature atherosclerosis in children,
- pathogenesis of primary and secondary glomerulopathies,
- aetiopathogenesis of urinary tract infections in children with urinary tract abnormalities,
- role of hormones, oxygen free radicals, adhesion molecules and cytokines in the pathomechanism of renal disorders.

The results of the study have been published in Polish and international journals and presented at national and international conferences in nephrology, paediatric nephrology, paediatrics and family medicine. Many of these have been published in renowned journals on the Philadelphia list.

B. Inter-centre cooperation in Poland:
a. with paediatric nephrology centres as part of research coordinated by them; e.g.:
- congenital tubulopathies (POLtube)
- new-onset nephrotic syndrome in the Polish paediatric population (Nephrosis OnLine)
- Alport syndrome
- IgA nephropathy
- congenital and steroid-resistant nephrotic syndromes (PodoNet)
- early treatment with rituximab of children with steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome and frequent relapses
- haemolytic uremic syndromes

Multi-centre studies coordinated by the Centre in Wrocław: psychosocial aspects of CKD in children; depressive disorders in children with CKD

b. with paediatric nephrology and urology centres and urology: lower urinary tract disorders; urotherapy
c. with the Medical University of Wrocław, University of Physical Education in Wrocław - implementation of scientific research, subject matter as above.
d. with the Institute of Psychology of the University of Wrocław

C. International collaborations:

Participation in studies on e.g.: molecular basis of Sensebrenner syndrome,
treatment of anaemia and hyperphosphatemia in children and adolescents with chronic kidney disease, psychosocial situation of children with CKD and their families; in addition, genetic studies in children with Dent's disease and their family members; in ADTKD and other tubulopathies, CAKUT, in children with congenital and steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome.

TEACHING ACTIVITIES

The Clinical Department of Paediatric Nephrology provides pre- and postgraduate didactic activities. Polish- and English-speaking students from the faculties of medicine, dentistry and medical analytics are trained in paediatrics and paediatric nephrology. Postgraduate training is provided in paediatrics, nephrology and paediatric nephrology, in addition to training and courses for doctors specialising in family medicine and infectious diseases.

CLINICAL ACTIVITY

The Clinical Department comprises two wards: for children aged 0-6 years and 7-18 years, a Dialysis Station, a Urodynamic Research Laboratory and a Nephrology Outpatient Clinic for Children.

Clinical activities concern children, mainly from the Lower Silesia, Opolskie, Wielkopolskie and Lubuskie Voivodeships, and adults undergoing haemodialysis treatment.
The scope of activities is as follows:
a. diagnosis and treatment of:
urinary tract infections, urinary tract defects, lower urinary tract disorders, tubulointerstitial nephritis acute and chronic, primary and secondary glomerulopathies, tubulopathies, urolithiasis, hypertension, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease
b. Dialysis therapy and other extracorporeal therapy techniques: peritoneal dialysis, haemodialysis therapy, plasmapheresis
c. Nephrology consultations for neonatology, paediatrics and other specialist departments in the region; paediatric consultations for laryngology departments, ophthalmology and paediatric surgery departments at the University Clinical Hospital.
